Jons Jacob Berzelius. The arrangement of elements in patterns paved the way to the tabulation of the element according to its chemical and physical properties

Swedish chemist Jöns Jacob Berzelius (1779-1848) is widely credited with establishing several of these standard methods, while raising the sophistication of laboratory chemistry to new heights during the first half of the nineteenth century. Jacob Berzelius was one of the founders of modern chemistry. He was the first person to measure accurate atomic weights for the elements, which helped to confirm Dalton’s Atomic Theory and was the basis of Mendeleev’s periodic table. He discovered three chemical elements: cerium, thorium, and selenium, and devised the modern method by which one or two letters are used to symbolize the elements. Jöns Jacob Berzelius, (born Aug. 20, 1779, near Linköping, Swed.—died Aug. 7, 1848, Stockholm), one of the founders of modern chemistry. He is especially noted for his determination of atomic weights, the development of modern chemical symbols, his electrochemical theory, the discovery and isolation of several elements, the development of classical analytical techniques, and his investigation of isomerism and catalysis, phenomena that owe their names to him.

Berzelius is considered, along with Robert Boyle, John Dalton, and Antoine Lavoisier, to be one of the founders of modern chemistry. Berzelius became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1808 and served from 1818 as its principal functionary. He is known in Sweden as the "Father of Swedish Chemistry". Berzelius Day is celebrated on 20 August in honour of him. Although Berzelius began his career as a physician, his Lived 1779 – 1848. Jacob Berzelius was one of the founders of modern chemistry.

Berzelius developed the radical theory of chemical combination, which holds that reactions occur as stable groups of atoms called radicals are exchanged between molecules. He believed that salts are compounds of an acid and bases, and discovered that the anions in acids would be attracted to a positive electrode, whereas the cations in a base would be attracted to a negative electrode.

He is especially noted for his determination of atomic weights, the development of modern chemical symbols, his electrochemical theory, the discovery and isolation of several elements, the development of classical analytical techniques, Jons Jakob Berzelius. In the 1820's Jons Jakob Berzelius law, "The Law of Constant Proportions," developed a table of atomic weights, and introduced letters to symbolize elements. His discovery led to new elements. He found out lithium, vanadium, and several rare earths.
