298 x – nitrous oxide (N 2 O) – I.e. Releasing 1 kg of N 2 O into the atmosphere is about equivalent to releasing about 298 kg of CO2. Nitrous oxide persists in the atmosphere for more than a century. It’s 20-year and 100-year GWP are basically the same. The Global Warming Potential (GWP) metric examines each greenhouse gas’s ability to trap heat in the atmosphere compared to carbon dioxide (CO 2). We measure this over a specified time horizon. Often, we calculate GHG emissions in terms of how much CO 2 is essential to produce a similar warming effect over the chosen time horizon. The GWP was a positive number, because the GWP from N 2 O emissions was significantly higher than that from CH 4 uptake .

So if each tonne of these gases is multiplied by its GWP and added to the CO2 gas total, the result will be total CO2e.
